“The
Guru’s Grace is always there. You imagine it to be something somewhere
high up in the sky that has to descend; but really it is inside you,
in your heart. The moment you effect the subsidence or merging of the
mind into its Source, by Self-Inquiry, the Grace rushes forth, spouting
as from a spring within you.”
- Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi
AHAM honors
the traditional, long established rule of respecting the hierarchy of
one’s spiritual lineage. That is, that the initiation into and
dissemination of a truly Conscious Spiritual Teaching and/or its Conscious
Processes is to always flow or descend in an officially authorized succession,
being only from someone who has been first fully trained in the particular
Teaching, and is then qualified to present the Teaching to other fit
or eligible students.
AHAM’s
role, and its authority to share the Conscious Process of Self-Inquiry
- introduced to the world by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi - was given
by the great sage Himself when he appeared to Ramana in a vision. This
occurred when Ramana was in deep meditation. The account of this “subtle
spiritual encounter” of Sri Bhagavan with A. Ramana, AHAM’s
founder and spiritual director, is given elsewhere on this web site.
(How AHAM
Came Into Being) It gives a definite account of AHAM’s
mission and role in instructing people around the world in this pure
Teaching, and thus clarifies how it is honoring this principle of spiritual
lineage.
People often have questions
about where Self-Inquiry came from. Some familiar with the traditional
rule of spiritual succession also have had questions about A. Ramana’s
authorization to teach Self-Inquiry, i.e., his relationship with Bhagavan
Sri Ramana Maharshi, and about Sri Ramana Maharshi Himself, and about
the latter’s own Guru, the Holy Hill Arunachala. Also there are
often questions arising about the first meeting between Elizabeth MacDonald
and her relationship with A. Ramana and AHAM.
It is noteworthy that all
of AHAM’s Trainers have in due course received both this Teaching
and the authorization to instruct others in it from A. Ramana. This
has come about under the personal training of Elizabeth MacDonald, AHAM’s
senior trainer, who is also AHAM’s executive director. However,
each Trainer’s training has been under the guidance and careful scrutiny
of Ramana, himself.
