Homage To The Presence
Of Sri Ramana
by Sri Muruganar
The foremost duty of a
fully dedicated aspirant, to his Guru, is to live the Master's teachings
in such a way that his own flowering benefits not only himself but radiates
its fragrance for all to imbibe.
Being both a mystic, poet
and devotee par excellence, Sri Muruganar fulfilled this duty to perfection.
His life was an example one lived in perfect devotion, and his poetical
outpourings, composed in the most exquisite classical Tamil, display
the merging of bhakti into jnana (devotion into wisdom)
leaving a legacy for all time.
In “Homage to the
Presence,” Muruganar expresses his well of devotion to the Guru
in 1851 verses of soul-stirring poetry. 473 of these verses were edited
and placed together to create a work the reader is sure to enjoy.

Hunting the ‘I’
According to Sri Ramana Maharshi
by Lucy Cornelssen
This succinct little book
presents the core of Bhagavan’s teaching in a highly readable
manner. With regard to why any investigation into the meaning of life
might be desirable, it begins, “ ‘Are you happy?’
When you reply with the counter question, ‘What is happiness?’
that means you have already observed how brittle, how transient and
short-lived your so-called happiness is.” Thus starts the investigation
into the true nature of your Being, which is itself Happiness.
There is an excellent explanation
here of using the gap between sleeping and waking as an opportunity
to have “one foot” in Pure Consciousness and one in wakefulness;
to access the thoughtlessness of deep dreamless sleep from the recognition
available in the waking state. “This experiment gives you the
advantage that you now know the aim of your endeavor. It will help you
in your further sadhana (spiritual practice) like leavening
in the dough.”

Insights
by A. R. Natarajan
The sacred words of Sri
Ramana are timeless, because they are based on his direct experience
of steady Self-abidance. His message is open to all those concerned
with truth, with the search for Self-knowledge, to dwell on the meaning
of his words, statements and clarifications. They are like an “open
book,” from which one can derive strength and inspiration. There
is no need for any special scriptural knowledge for understanding his
teachings.
However it is absolutely
necessary to ponder over and reflect on the guidance given. Such a need
is there for any path, but it is more so in the Ramana Way. Why? For
it is bafflingly simple, seemingly without steps between the practice
and the goal. There is no system of “do’s” and “don’ts.”
No prescribed formula. The nature of the experience – natural
happiness – is the same during practice and what one is used to
calling the “ultimate” experience. The difference being
only that during the stage of practice, one keeps moving in and out
of this state of blissful, non-mental happiness.
The readings in this book
focus on the mind, and the way to make it quiet, indrawn and restful.
It is not geared toward an intellectual appreciation of Ramana’s
words, but rather allowing the reader to experience the natural state
of joy being conveyed. Hence the “insights” in the book
are to pull one away from the externalized, mental movement of the mind
and foster the inturning of the mind and its ultimate merging with its
conscious source.

Kaivalya Navaneeta
(The Cream Of Emancipation)
by Tandavaraya Swami
The “Kaivalya Navaneeta”
is a widely known Advaita (non-duality) classic. It is translated
from the original written in Tamil. From the vast ocean of the Upanishads,
etc., the great teachers have drawn the cream of wisdom. The two sections
of this work are called “The Exposition of the Truth” and
“Doubts Cleared Away.” They explain the basic philosophical
principles of Advaita and clear the doubts that are likely
to arise in understanding these principles. In a language easy to understand,
the author gives a remarkably clear description of the tenets of Advaita.

The Last Days & Maha-Nirvana
of Bhagavan Sri Ramana
published by V. S. Ramanan, President, Sri Ramanasramam
Bhagavan’s last months
in the body were as inspirational and significant as any time he spent
with his devotees. He shows us how one can remain in a state of permanent
bliss even though the body is wracked with pain. Bhagavan simply sat
as a spectator, watching the cancer destroy the body. He had immense
compassion for those who grieved over the suffering; and he sought constantly
to appease their grief—not the easy way, by removing the suffering
and postponing death for a few years, but the fundamental way by making
them realize that the body was not him.
Arthur Osborne observed,
“ When he consented to wear the human form, having formerly transcending
the human and all other states, Bhagavan accepted all its limitations—to
feel heat and cold, to suffer pain and sickness, to be bound by the
ignorance of events. Had he while wearing a human body set himself free
from its conditions of pain and sickness and ignorance of events, people
would have said: “It is easy for him to tell us to abide in the
heart, unperturbed by events, because he has no pain or uncertainty
and we have.” So he accepted pain and uncertainty as features
of the human form and showed that they cannot touch the equanimity of
the Jnani (sage), who remains fixed immovably in the Real.”

Letters from Sri Ramanasramam
by Suri Nagamma
This book contains discussions
between Bhagavan and his devotees or visitors, written by a devotee
in the form of letters to her brother. The translator writes, “The
letters are a veritable mine of information presented in a simple and
easily understandable manner, and are well worth a careful study, not
only by the spiritual aspirant but also by the lay reader.”
In this deeply meaningful
compilation, Bhagavan responds to a range of questions, from how to
see everything as one’s Self, to the nature of existence after
Realization. A youth came to Bhagavan, asking what surrender to God
really means. “Does it mean sitting still at one place, and contemplating
God at all times... or when one gets ill, one should not think of medicine
and treatment, but entrust one’s health or sickness exclusively
to Providence?”
Bhagavan replied, “One
must take things as they come in accordance with one’s traditions,
and must be free from the feeling that one is doing them oneself. The
feeling that ‘I am doing it’ is bondage. It is therefore
necessary to consider and find out the method whereby such a feeling
can be overcome.”

Living with Ramana Maharshi
edited and compiled by A. R. Natarajan
In the life of Bhagavan
Ramana there are many unique things. First is his accessibility. He
was available to his disciples, devotees and visitors round the clock.
The second aspect is the absolute equality with which he treated everyone.
The rich, the poor, the learned and the ignorant, people in position
and authority and humble servants were all at par. The third aspect
is that even though his love was universal, every person would feel
that Sri Ramana regarded him as his very own. As a result, even though
his spiritual status as a jnani, a person of steady wisdom,
made him olympian, there was nothing that could not be shared with him.
Some of those who lived
with him have been able to communicate the experience of living and
working with Bhagavan. This book contains seven different experiences
of the grace Sri Bhagavan so generously extended to all in his presence.
All of the stories are uniquely different, and yet underlying each is
the strong heart-felt love of Sri Bhagavan and the immense grace each
experienced in his midst.
“All the time I was
chanting I could feel Sri Bhagavan keenly observing me. It seemed that
the light of his eyes was suffusing my consciousness, even without my
being conscious of it. His silent gaze brought about a subtle but definite
transformation in me. The darkness, which a few minutes before had seemed
heavy and unbearable, gradually lightened and melted into a glow of
well-being. My erstwhile sadness completely disappeared, leaving in
my heart an inexplicable emotion of joy. My limbs appeared to have been
washed in an ocean-tide of freedom.”

The Maharshi
by T. V. Kapali Sastry
This volume is compiled
from the papers of Sri Kapali Sastriar. The first section consists of
articles written, now almost seven decades ago, on special occasions
at the ashram of Sri Bhagavan Ramana. These articles and most of the
portions of the third section of the book appeared originally in the
Sunday Times. The contents of the second section were published for
the first time in this work.
Sri Sastriar first came
into the circle of the Maharshi's teaching in 1911, as a disciple of
Sri Kavyakantha Ganapati Sastrigal, one of the most noted of the Maharshi’s
disciples at that time. Sri Sastriar had the benefit of direct instruction
from Sri Ramana. His commentaries on the teachings of the Maharshi were
submitted to Bhagavan and accepted by him.

Periapuranam
translated by R. Rangachari
The Periapuranam is the
song of the lives of 63 Saivite ancient Tamil saints sung by a poet
saint. Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi points to the reading of the Periapuranam
as a significant event in his life.
In the source biography
of Bhagavan, “Self-Realization,” we read: “Towards
the end of 1895 (perhaps a few months after hearing about Arunachala
from a relative, and a few months before his 1896 death experience and
transformation) he found at home a copy of the Periapuranam which his
uncle had borrowed. This was the first religious book that he went through
apart from his class lessons and it interested him greatly... It transported
him to a different world... As he read on, surprise, admiration, awe,
reverence, sympathy and emulation swept over his soul in succession...
but when the book had been quickly read through and laid aside, the
new impulses and ideals disappeared leaving him as he was before that
study."”
The availability of this
work provides us with the opportunity to experience for ourselves the
text that elicited such inspiring emotions in the young Bhagavan Ramana.

The Poems of Sri Ramana
Maharshi
translated by Sadhu Arunachala (Major A. W. Chadwick)
Major Chadwick, an Englishman,
was the first westerner to move to Sri Ramanashram. A loyal and earnest
devotee, he had the grace to spend much time in Sri Bhagavan’s
presence from his arrival at the ashram in 1935, until Bhagavan’s
Maha-Nirvana in 1950. Upon his arrival, and speaking only English, he
found the translations of Bhagavan’s works into English often
to be unsatisfactory or incomplete; and thus decided to compile his
own versions. All translations were placed before Bhagavan for his approval
and fine-tuning. Bhagavan would often make corrections, explaining the
meaning in detail and suggesting alterations, which Major Chadwick would
then incorporate into his verses. The result is a unique collection
of Bhagavan’s verses and poems, translated into English, under
the direction and guidance of Sri Ramana Maharshi, himself.

A Practical Guide To
Know Yourself (Conversations With Sri Ramana Maharshi)
compiled and Edited by A. R. Natarajan
The sacred words of Ramana
Maharshi are original and independent utterances based on his direct
experience, and their message is for all. There is no doubt concerning
the spiritual path which is left unanswered. While the Maharshi enriched
and clarified all that is worthwhile in philosophic thought and practice,
he has also given a distinct path, a straight path for Self-Knowledge
to dawn. The Ramana Path is the path of Self-Inquiry. While philosophic
thought generally concerns itself with God, Self, the unknown, the Maharshi
focuses attention entirely on the individual.
Though we think we are
familiar with the “I,” properly directed inquiry would reveal
that the assumptions on which we proceed, and things we take for granted,
are not valid.
This selection of conversations
with Sri Ramana Maharshi and various seekers, their arrangement, and
the editorial notes, have been made with regard to the reader’s
need. The purpose is, that it may serve as a practical guide to Self-Knowledge.
Such knowledge opens up for us our own natural, but hidden, happiness.

The Quintessence Of
Wisdom
by M. Anantanarayanan
The quintessence of religion
is Self-Knowledge. It is an adventure of the spirit, a quest after the
real and the immanent, a continuous process of emancipation from the
shackles of doctrines, prejudices and practices. True religion is rooted
in inner experience, a unique realization of Being.
The Thirty Verses of Sri
Ramana gives us this religion of the spirit. It is an ethical and rational
approach, relating the problems of the external world to inner belief
and understanding. The insistence on inner personal experience as the
measure of all things is authentic, and its relevance to spiritual liberation
is obvious.
The reader will welcome
the author’s commentary on the Thirty Verses for they are insightful
concise and beneficial.

Radiance Of The Self:
A Photographic Presentation Of Sri Ramana Maharshi
photos by P. R. Subramanian (Mani)
This book contains 170
photographs of Sri Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi, beginning with the first
known photograph taken in 1900 or 1901 while Bhagavan was staying in
Virupaksha cave. Along with each set of photographs is a description
by the photographer, relating a brief history of the photograph.
Sri Bhagavan’s grace, in
all its plenitude, flows through these pictures. Their appeal is universal;
there is a spontaneous and immediate rapport.
Ramana Maharshi use to
call the photographer, P. R. Subramanian, “Mani.” Mani spent
the last 14 years of his life under the loving guidance of Sri Bhagavan.
Consequently one might say that Mani’s camera became blessed.
Mani took many photographs, particularly during Skandasramam days. This
book is a feast for the eyes.

Ramana-Arunachala
by Arthur Osborne
The author of this book,
Arthur Osborne, arrived at Ramanasramam in October 1945 following a
three and a half year internment in a Japanese concentration camp. He
remained there until the beginning of 1948. Thereafter he obtained work
in a nearby city and visited Sri Bhagavan on weekends and holidays.
Osborne was present on the fateful April night of Bhagavan’s Mahasamadhi
(death), and subsequently took over as editor of the Ashram’s
quarterly publication, The Mountain Path, holding that position for
almost twenty-five years.
Several years after Bhagavan’s
Mahasamadhi, Osborne had a dream in which Sri Bhagavan placed His hands
on Osborne’s head as he knelt before Him. Although he previously
felt no urge to write about Bhagavan, there immediately arose in him
an impulse to write his memories and experiences about being in the
presence of the Master. He particularly wanted to explain the accessibility
of Bhagavan’s teaching, the path of Self-Inquiry. This he does
successfully in language that is direct and easy to understand. He also
succeeds in presenting an intimate portrayal of Sri Bhagavan from his
perspective as one of Bhagavan’s most dedicated and influential
Western devotees.

Ramana Gita - Dialogues
With Sri Ramana Maharshi
by Ganapati Muni
Commentary compiled by A. R. Natarajan
This text consists of three
hundred verses arranged in eighteen chapters. The material was written
from the questions asked Sri Bhagavan by disciples between the years
1913 and 1917 and arranged in the format of the Bhagavad Gita. Some
of the disciples were advanced in yoga, some involved in inner exploration,
some of them simply sought answers for intricate questions from the
Maharshi. The work deals with more than just the philosophical content
of the Teaching. It also deals with the practical discipline and the
process to be adopted to reach the goal, or realize the Truth of the
Self for one’s Self.
The commentator, A. R.
Natarajan, adds a substantial amount of detail that brings the work
into perspective for the typical reader. The commentary provides background
information for the reader on some of the passages, as well as quotes
from other sources of Sri Ramana Maharshi’s teaching, along with
references to supportive passages from scriptural texts.

Ramana’s
Arunachala
by Sri Bhagavan’s Devotees
A work of this kind is
not a record of facts and details. What this book records are the experiences
of devotees, sages and saints who have felt Arunachala in the hill,
Arunachala in the temple and Arunachala in Sri Ramana. They live and
breathe Arunachala. They speak of Arunachala as a mother would of her
child, or a lover of his beloved, not in measured terms, but in awed
tones and with overwhelmed sensitivity. The reader is invited to join
as a spectator of this love affair.
The joy and delight the
writers feel, the choking emotions they try to express here, are sure
to capture the heart of the reader, making him or her long for these
experiences.
The divine is beyond thought.
Yet He allows Himself to be reflected in a sigh, a tear, a gasp, a look
of wonder. This is what this book is. Long after the words are forgotten,
the details erased from memory, one can feel inwardly the sigh, the
tear, the gasp, the look of wonder and say, “This is Arunachala,
this is Ramana.”

clarity of communicating ideas centered around the life and teachings

understanding of Bhagavan’s teachings, an unerring comprehension

Reminiscences

It is indeed a most rare
and fortunate privilege when one is able to live and serve a Jnani,
a Master of Truth. It is even far greater when he puts into practice
the teaching of such a Master and proves that the teaching is a livable,
living Truth. Sri Kunjuswami is one who had that fortune. In this book,
is a treasure trove of spiritual wisdom. “To remember and to recount
the essence and glory of the Master’s words of wisdom,”
Sri Kunjuswami repeatedly says, “is the major duty of a devout
disciple.” This is surely a “must have” for anyone
who views Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi as his Guru.
